A functional capacity evaluation is a comprehensive set of standardised and non-standardized assessments designed to objectively measure the functional abilities of a client about their ability to perform everyday activities and work-related tasks. In the mental health field, the evaluation is focused on the emotional, cognitive, and sometimes physical demands of the job, based on the job description.
FCEs are usually requested during applications for ill health, disability or insured benefits.
FCEs can take up to 4 hours.
A comprehensive report is compiled to describe the findings of the functioning noted, provide insight into job-specific abilities and readiness to return to work as well as provide recommendations for adaptations / accommodations / treatment to enhance performance and future potential for return to work.
